Now is the Time to Get Your Execs in Front of a Camera

Very few people like to be on camera.

You’d think with the proliferation of social media and the era of the selfie that people wouldn’t freeze up when you put them in front of a video camera. But many do. There’s something about lights, a camera and a microphone that makes people uncomfortable.

That’s why now is the time to get your executives in front of a camera. They don’t have to come off as professionals. They don’t have to be polished. But they do have to look comfortable.

Whether they’re delivering an address to employees, appearing in a marketing video or – worst case scenario – addressing the media in response to some crisis, you need execs who exude poise and confidence on camera.

How do you get that poise and confidence? The same way you get to Carnegie Hall – practice, practice, practice. There’s nothing like experience. I’ve worked with some CEOs that became very comfortable after the first few times we worked together.

Consider setting up a low-stakes video project and include a few of your top people.  You’ll find out who is best under the big lights and that will help you plan who to go to when it’s crunch time.

Or bring in a producer to work with your people. Your employees will have a better understanding of what is being asked of them and they’ll see that the video crew is on their side – doing their best to make them sound and look good.

Not many people will come to love the experience of being on camera, but armed with some experience they will be an asset to your organization.
