What Not to Wear

When we schedule an on-camera interview we’re often asked, “What should I wear?”. That’s what not to weara great question, because how you look is the first impression you make. More often than not, we find it’s easier to list what you shouldn’t wear on camera.

A quick rundown:

  • Avoid very light or very dark colors (black or white)
  • Avoid deeply saturated colors such as red or orange
  • Avoid checks, plaids, extreme stripes, herringbone or any very tight patterns. They’ll moiré or strobe and that’s not a good look!
  • Minimize jewelry when possible – bracelets and necklaces can make noise and visually draw attention from your face and your message.

A few things to keep in mind when selecting clothes for on-camera:

  • Wear clothes that are comfortable. If you think you look awesome in that suit but it’s a size too small, you’ll look uncomfortable.
  • Think of the image you’re trying to project. It’s simple if you’re the CEO of the company. But what if the crew is shooting people in your manufacturing facility? Ripped jeans may be fine for the work they’re doing, but not the best choice for the company video. You may want them to clean it up a bit for the cameras.
  • Bring a few options with you. You don’t need to buy an entire new wardrobe. But a different shirt, a different tie or a different blouse may make all the difference in the world.

One final suggestion: don’t stress out about it. The crew is there to make you look good – you’re the client after all.
